What’s Twitch?

Twitch is a popular online service for watching and streaming digital video broadcasts. Since its creation in 2011, this social video game platform has evolved from focusing entirely on video games to expand to sports, music, creative arts, events, talk shows and one of the most popular Twitch-video categories: IRL (In Real Life).

Numbers speak by themselves:

  • 15 million visitors gather daily to interact on this platform
  • 106 minutes watched per person per day
  • 2 million unique creators who broadcast each month
  • 17 thousand of these users earn money through the Twitch Partner Program

Twitch was purchased by Amazon in 2014. Twitch is the fourth most trafficked site behind Netflix, Google (includes YouTube) and Apple.

Is Twitch a Social Network?

Twitch homepage became more of a social network since the announcement of Pulse earlier this year. The main aim for this change is to make it easier for streamers and viewers to engage with each other, whether a stream is live or not.

Twitch communications wrote in a blog post: “Pulse is a place where streamers can post and engage with all of their followers right from the Twitch front page. It’s an always-on way to share clips, stream highlights, schedules, photos, and more so followers are more informed, engaged, and connected.”

It’s a way to stay tapped into the service in a way that wasn’t possible before without supplementing with outside services like Twitter or Facebook.

Are People Really Making a Living on Twitch?

Many content creators are making a living on this platform based solely on how they entertain and interact with their audiences.

While not everyone on Twitch has quit their day job a large number of streamers do actually make a full-time living. This is through a combination of recurring paid subscriptions, donations, sponsorships, advertisements and affiliate sales.

However, reaching this level of financial success requires a lot of dedication with most of the more-popular partners streaming 5 to 7 days a week to maintain their audience.

Why it help you grow your audience?

The site is also a magnet for marketers looking to reach out to an audience of young people. According to Twitch, 73% of its users fall between the ages of 18 and 49.

Twitch platform is an important tool that entrepreneurs should know. Marketers can look for content in terms of what streams are popular and which things are successful and which ones are not.

By positioning yourself wisely on this platform you will gain popularity among millions of potential consumers. Therefore, you need to pay attention to the specific target you want to attract. Then you need to be consistent, show them your love and stream things that are new and generate conversation.

For example, you can be the first on trying a game that is about to be released.  You can create a discussion and offer some insight to the viewers that are considering to buy the game.
